042425 On my way to Vegas Baby!….Lynn’s Latest #43

Last Thursday, while my ezine was being sent out, I was driving Zach to Pepperdine to spend the day with Houston.  I think it is soooooo cute that Houston wanted his cousin to shadow him to class all day.

It is kind of crazy, but Houston (28) and Zach (18) are 10 years apart and Indiana (26) and Kai (16) are also 10 years apart.  My sister, Kiki, was 7 years younger than me and she had her kids later in life.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE that the cousin bond is so strong!

Here is one of my favorite pictures of the cousins.  It was a few years ago at one of my favorite restaurants in Hollywood that is now out of business…Spartina.  UGhhhhh.  From left to right, Houston, Indiana, Zach and Kai.

Fast forward to last Thursday…..Here we are as the boys get ready to “go to school”.

Volume VI  Issue 000043

It was awesome that Houston gave us a tour of the law school and he introduced us to some of his friends.  I can’t believe that his first year is ending and I hadn’t been down to see him yet.  Ughhhh.  Life just goes by so fast!

The building is really quite small, but the views are incredible.  Here are the boys outside on the patio.  Too bad it was overcast.  That is the ocean behind them!

The cousins both had backpacks…Zach’s was a little bit bigger than Houston’s because it was packed for the first 5 days of his PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) journey.  Once he put in all of the food I bought him, it weighed 23 pounds with all his gear…sleeping bag, cooking stuff, food, clothing etc.

I thought it would be fun to get a front pic and back pic.  LOL.  They were good sports!  And they were both wearing similar cargo pants….btw, that shirt that Zach is wearing he “bought” it at my store.

He will only have one shirt with him to start and he picked this out and then we realized that my mom (his grandma…aka MorMor) is the one that consigned it…Awwww Serendipity and therefore it was free :).

While at the Pepperdine Caruso Law School, I did wander into the book store and bought myself a t-shirt.  Gotta rep the kid’s school…si or no?  In any event, I wore it to work on Friday and it was FREEZING…so had to throw on a jean jacket.

I did film a TikTok with Eddie (one of our favs) while wearing this amazing new ensemble.  Just kidding!

Eddie was shopping for his upcoming trip to Burning Man in August.   What do you think of his new ensemble?  Hahahaha.  Check out our Tiktok here!

Time for an eBay score! As you know, we are no longer carrying IOD, Annie Sloan or Redesign with Prima.  In the store, all of these awesome products are now 20% off.  However, there is not a huge demand for these products in our tiny market, but there is a huge demand worldwide.

So, I listed most of these items on eBay and RAISED the prices 20%.  Sold out of this one transfer in a few weeks.  SCORE!

Check out the listing here.

Let’s get back to the store….I was exhausted from my week moving Indy and then hosting Zach…but all good now and we are well rested!

On Saturday, we had the cutest customers come in.  Check out Mark and Veronica who were visiting from New Zealand and bought some fun things to take home with them.  A California license plate for Mark and a faux scrimshaw for Veronica.

Saturday evening as I was getting ready to close the store, I was walking over to Santa Cruz market to buy some asparagus for dinner, I saw a familiar face get out of a car in the parking lot.  WHAT the heck?  It was James Chapman.

Long story short.  I got my MBA at USC back in 1992 and James was one of my favorite people.  In fact, he and John Dilullo both made the trek to Bellingham, WA to attend my wedding to William.  We were all USC MBA graduates.  It was sooooo great to see him!

I posted that picture on Instagram/Facebook and had to laugh out loud when John Dilullo posted.  OMG!  These boys!

Seriously, the “wow just wow” got me.  I  miss these boys.  And here is a photo from my wedding back in 1993… where both boys were present.

From left to right, Annie Hurtado, James (who came to visit), me, John Dilluo, Juliette Capretta (behind William my husband) William’s friend (Brian Wilson JD/MBA from USC) and Dean Factor.  What a fun day!

And yes, we were doing the trojan marching band tusk dance and that is why we all look so crazy!

Later on that same Saturday, Martha’s boyfriend Jesse, came in with their son Phoenix.  He is only six months and such a cutie!  They bought him this little chair that is just his size.

This was the first Easter in a long time that I did not make baskets for my kids.  To be honest, I was exhausted from Indy & Larissa’s move.  And I had just spent a bunch of time with all of them!  It was nice to have a little break.

I did get a super sweet text from Indiana though.

And just for fun, I will share a few picture from an Easter past.  This was during covid and it was actually a super fun day!

I am not sure why they all had potholders on their hands, but maybe they were cooking! Then the kids used their Baggus to collect eggs that year.  And speaking of Baggu, we are getting some new styles in this week!  Very exciting!

On Easter Sunday, I got a text from Sandy and she said “Let’s go to Tony’s for Pizza and sunshine”.  It was an immediate YES!  I love Tony’s and it would be nice to get out of the house as all I did on Easter was laundry, dishes and clean house.  And I hadn’t seen Sandy in a week as all she does is work anymore!

We headed to Tony’s at 4:30 and the band was awesome, but it was soooooo cold and windy that we changed plans and ended up at Cafe Fiore by the fireplace….and for the life of us we could not get a good picture, but we did get a pic of our drinks.  LOL.

Then Monday we did Fit Buddha and headed to Lure for Martini Monday.  We tried to get a photo and this is as good as it got!  Oh well!

And here is another fun TikTok with Cha Cha.  Who wore it better?  Click here to watch the video.

So far everyone is saying that Cha Cha wore it better.  Well Susan and my own daughter…..

Some exciting news!  I got a text from Houston on Easter and this is what he said…..

“I’m considering where I’ll live next year.  Wanting to ask if living in Ventura might be an option?”

My answer…Of course!  The casita was his bedroom before I  started renting it out.  He still has 2 years left of law school and the commute to Pepperdine wouldn’t be too  bad..about 45 mins.  Fingers crossed!

Time for an eBay score!   I bought some head vases back in August of 2020 when visiting my mom up in Bellingham.  I took an offer of $50 for this one yesterday, because, why not?  And I probably paid $7 for it and had it for almost 5 years.  Time to move it out!

If you don’t know what a “head vase” is, let me explain…these were all the rage in the 1940’s and 1950’s and the head is actually open so that you could arrange flowers inside.  Weird, right?

Check out the listing here.

Just googled one to show you what it would look like with flowers in it and found these CRAZY expensive ones on Etsy with faux flowers and they are asking $540.  I think I am in the wrong business….si o no?

AND, I never want to visit the person’s house who collects these with the flowers in them.  Oh my!  Creepy!

Time for an update on my nephew Zach and his Pacific Crest Trail Hike.

But before I get to that, after our evening of Fit Buddha, dinner at the Saloon and shopping for his first five days of food…we came home and watched the old home movies that I had put on thumb drives as a Christmas present this past December.

It was crazy watching them because his mom (my sister) was between the ages of 20 and 22 in most of them.  Very close to Zach’s age now.  And she passed away when he was only 5 years old.  Bittersweet for both of us to watch them and we stayed up until Midnight doing so!  Crazy.

Here is Kiki showing us how to use the microwave one Christmas in my grandma’s kitchen…circa 1991.

Zach’s 19th Birthday was yesterday and he sent me these pics from the trail.  He left the Mexican/American Border on Saturday morning and as of yesterday, he had hiked 100 miles.  Way to go Zach!

I hope you don’t mind following along with us on his journey.  Remember what Zach said about decision….”I don’t want to live an Ordinary life.”  We should all aspire to this.  Let’s all live an EXTRAORDINARY Life!  He is definitely a DRALLE!

Many of you LOVE the stone bracelets that we sell for $4.95 each.  These make great gifts and we just got in a new shipment yesterday.  Tons of fun colors.  Come in and check them out!

I am headed to Vegas on Friday morning early.  What was I thinking?  What am I thinking?  I really don’t have the time to be going out of town.

But about 4 months ago, I saw that AC/DC was getting back together.  One of my best friends from high school, Kathy Rutan, absolutely loves AC/DC.  I think it is probably her favorite band, so I suggested that we all go to Vegas to see them.

Fast forward and here we go….wish me luck.  This is the four of us from a trip several years ago.  I LOVE my high school friends.

From left to right…Kathy Rutan, Jo Dallas, me and Leslie Arntzen.

041025 Car Troubles=Kid Visits!….Lynn’s Latest #41!

Last Thursday, after my ezine came out, I was sitting at my desk thinking about how I wanted to go down to Harbor Cove Cafe for dinner.  They have been closed for dinner all winter and it is one of my favorite restaurants.  But, I couldn’t figure out who I wanted to go with.

Then, I got a text from Indiana and Larissa!  They were on their way home to get her Jeep fixed.  Unfortunately, Indiana was visiting Houston at his new apartment and backed up into a concrete pole.  Ughhhh!  We decided we wouldn’t do any body work, but we would replace the tail lights.  Small price to pay to have the girls home for two days!

Volume VI  Issue 000041

The girls arrived just in time for dinner, but stopped by the store first to shop.  Indiana ended up buying a coffee mug that we had taken in that I thought would never sell because it was in terrible condition with crazing etc.  But it did say “Coffee Hound”.   Hahahaha.

After shopping, we took Indy’s Jeep over to Jay’s Automotive to drop off and I checked to see if Harbor Cove Cafe would be open for dinner that Thursday night.  Noooooooo!  They are only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.  So, we ended up at Casa Bella for Happy Hour with our favorite server/manager Carl.  Fun!

A friend commented that the girls don’t look old enough to drink….and funny enough they weren’t drinking, those were mock tails!

The girls weren’t going back to LA until Saturday morning, so we made plans to do dinner at Harbor Cove Cafe on Friday.  Always a fun time!

Time for an eBay score!  Back in 2017 when I was still living in Palm Desert I went to an estate sale run by my friends JnJ…Jack and John.  The house had limited edition prints taped up on every wall.  They were only $5 to $10 each.  I bought them all!

And over the years, I have sold all but a few for close to $3,000.  Yipppeeee!  This is one of the smaller ones that I had left and I just sold it for $199 and it was shipped to Canada.  Score!

 Check out the listing here.

Indiana had to work at 6:30 am on Saturday morning.  Ughhhh!  When I heard her alarm go off at 5:30 am I was NOT happy!  Oh well…anything to have my kids come home and visit!

And Houston was also having car issues so his car (originally my dad’s car that he insisted on leaving to Houston) was towed home on Thursday, and I got to drive it all week!  FUN—it drives so well and it used to belong to Bill Gates!

And I also paid for Houston’s repairs…again, anything to  get the kids home!  And Houston will be riding his bike from Pepperdine to Ventura tonight to get his car and we will go to dinner!  Yippppeee!

While driving Houston’s car to work and parking it in the back lot, Sendia stopped by to bring us some consignments and thought I wasn’t working because my SUV wasn’t here.

Luckily, she came in  anyway…it was so good to see her!  I miss her!  And she misses us as well :).  But her grandchildren are her priority these days.

She jumped right in behind the counter, helping customers, pricing her own stuff and just being the wonderful person she is!

This weekend, Sandy, Sendia, Val and myself are all attending the Khay Festival at the Camarillo airport this weekend.  FUN!

Here is a fun eBay score.  I LOVE it when thrift stores price the pieces in a set all separately.  For example, they don’t sell the entire set for one price, but individually price cereal bowls, dinner plates etc.  That way I can do my research and figure out which pieces of the set will sell for the most and only buy the “hot” items!

I bought 8 of these bowls in Palm Desert for $2 each back in October.  They retail on Replacements.com for $79.99 each and the cup/saucer sets only go for $8.99 and Salad plates only $19.99….so lesson here….pass on the cheaper items that will take a lot of schlepping (handling).

Check out the listing here.    Sold for full asking price.  Interesting side note, when I listed these in my eBay store the price on Replacements.com was only $49.99 each so that is where I priced them (I usually match their pricing).  Now that I know they are now $79.99 each….should I raise my prices?

In Houston news, he posted about an encounter that he had on one of his many bus rides home from Pepperdine Law School.  It actually made me cry, so I asked him if I could put it in the newsletter and he said Yes!

Houston met an older man Lawrence on the bus and he was telling Houston how he would like to get in touch with his brother.  So, Houston let him use his phone.  The exchange brought tears to my eyes.

Can you even imagine not talking to your brother/sister for 5 years?  And we can’t ever forget that Lawrence is someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s cousin, maybe even someone’s father…..he is important to many people, not just a face on a bus.

Houston also got a kick out of Lawrence guessing his age.  LOL.

I was exhausted from having the girls in town for two nights (thurs & fri)…but I am not complaining at all!  Then on Saturday, Sandy and Marian invited me to the Bombay after work to see a really cool country band–Cory B Clay & the Twains.  I couldn’t say no!  So off I went from work to the Bombay!  It was fun and luckily I had Sunday off 🙂

Sunday, I  did stuff around the house, listed on eBay and got ready for the week.

On Monday, Marc was sick so he didn’t teach Fit Buddha…so no “Martini Monday”.  Instead, I took Cha Cha down to the beach.  We had a LOVELY day!

I have been trying to showcase a cool customer or consignor in every newsletter.  This week we have Ann Bittl…who was brave enough to be interviewed on our new Tik Tok channel.  Check out the video here.

Time for another eBay score…Mo found these Tommy Bahama plastic (yes plastic) bowls out in the desert for $1 each.  Just sold four of them for $87.99!  Sweet!  You are probably starting to see that bowls often sell for more than other dinnerware pieces….just not rimmed soup bowls.  Stay away from those!

Check out the listing here.

As you know….We will not be carrying Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, Iron Orchid Designs or Redesign with Prima any longer.  AND we can ship any of these items.  Please check out our website at www.funhomefurnishings.com.

We will be liquidating this stock and this week you can save 20% on any of these brands!

The girls do such great little displays around the store, I thought I would share some more this week.

And is this SCREAMING “White Lotus” Vibes?  I mentioned to Susan, that maybe we should do a White Lotus inspired front window.  Is it too late?  Thoughts?  Or would it just be FUN!

I will be heading into LA next Tuesday to help Indiana with her move.  I have rented a u-haul truck and am looking for two dependable strong youngsters to help us load it in the Marina del Rey/Santa Monica area if you know of anyone?????

And Zach, my nephew, will be flying in Tuesday night for a short visit as he is on his way to hike the Pacific Coast Trail.  Can’t wait to see him!

Houston has accepted the internship with the LA District Attorneys office.  So proud of him and his summer job!  He looks so happy in class at Pepperdine.  Although, finals are just around the corner.  Wish him luck!

031325 Over the Rain! Lynn’s Latest #37

Just returned from the desert and it was super fun.  I brought back some nice artwork along with some other cool items.

Here I am meeting up with Indy last Friday on my way out of town.  When we got to the Starbucks in Sherman Oaks, Cha Cha went nuts!  She knew that we were meeting Indy (since that is where I usually hand her off) and she was sooooooo excited.

I took a little video of Cha Cha being so excited to see Indy, but my sweet (not so smart) Cha didn’t know which direction to look.  Cha Cha’s tail was going a 100 miles a minute and the arrow points to Indy’s Jeep….but the Cha was not looking in the correct direction at all.  Hahahaha!

Volume VI  Issue 000037

Once I left Indiana and Cha Cha I headed to the desert.  It only took me another 2 hours and I was in a rush to get to a church rummage sale before it ended.

I made it with plenty of time to spare!  Here is what the sale looked like as I “approached”.  LOL.

Love me a good “rummage” sale!  I was looking for unique items for the store, dinnerware and flatware sets for eBay and artwork…also for the store.

When I saw these two flatware sets, I had to laugh.  Amateurs who try and price collectible ultimately make mistakes.  Lucky for us!

Notice the gold electroplate set they were able to identify and found a set of 4 pieces “selling” on eBay for $24.99.  I put the “selling” in quotes because it is an asking price not an actual “sold” listing.  Big difference.

Then they said “Our set is much bigger $50.00”.  But right above that set was a stainless Stanley Roberts HUGE set of Jefferson Manor for only $15.00.

Score, I sell Jefferson Manor really well and the dinner fork alone is worth $19.99!

In honor of my epic purchase for only $15.00, let’s check out a flatware score from this week.

Bought a huge set of Oneida colored flatware at Angel View in Palm Desert about 2 years ago for $19.99.

Just sold these 4 Oval Place Soup Spoons for $52.79.  Check out the listing here.

After that Church Rummage Sale I headed to my favorite thrift stores.  At the Restore (Habitat for Humanity) I was appalled to see these two McKenzie Child pieces priced at $70.00 for the two…..Seriously, what is the world coming to?

I thrifted all day Friday, then made plans to hit estate sales on Saturday morning.  The first one I went to I walked in and saw a very familiar man.  I looked at him and said “You are Adrian’s dad” and he said “You are Houston’s mom”.  LOL.  Small world.   We did live in the desert for 16 years!  LOL.

Houston and Adrian were great buddies and had gone to high school together at Xavier College Prep.  Adrian almost attended Pepperdine with Houston.  I still exchange Christmas Cards with the Davila family so it was great to see him and catch up!

Saturday evening, I had plans to hang out with Sandra (my former neighbor) and retail mentor.  She is a wealth of information and I really enjoy our discussions.  Also, she makes a killer drink called the “French Boy”.

However, that is “her” name for it.  It’s bar name is “French Connection” and she never measures.  She just pours….LOL.  It is Grand Marnier 1st and then Brandy.  So delicious!

After Sandra’s house, I went to Rubios to grab dinner.  I used to go to Rubios with my ex-husband in La Jolla years ago and it is one of my favorites.  Unfortunately, the ones in Oxnard and Ventura closed so I was thrilled to find one in Palm Desert.

Time for an eBay score.  Speaking of going to Rubios years ago, I bought this set of china years ago!  I have had it listed on eBay for 10 years and I am not proud of that fact.

However, these three demitasse cup and saucer sets FINALLY sold for a best offer of $75.  I will take it!

Check out the listing here.

On Sunday, both Mo and Kel had the day off so we made super fun plans.  We made a brunch reservation at Le Vallauris in Palm Springs for noon.  Unfortunately, we did not take into consideration daylight savings time.  Ughhhhh!  I hate it when the clocks go that direction :).

The brunch at Le Vallauris is unlimited champagne and a three course meal that you pick from their set menu.  I chose the caesar salad, the flat steak and an amazing ice cream desert.  It isn’t cheap….$79 per person, but such a treat!

Here are Kel and I after with our leftovers…and yes you always have a lot of leftovers from this place.

The Palm Desert girls and I did more thrifting on Sunday and called it a day.  I left the desert early Monday morning to drive into Brentwood to pick up Cha Cha from Indiana.

Indy was training at the Cafe Luxxe location on San Vicente right next to Chin Chins.  Guess where Cha Cha and I went for lunch?  We LOVE their Chinese chicken salad.  I have been going to Chin Chins since 1985 when I graduated from USC (and lived in an apartment right behind the restaurant on Dorothy Street)…. so OMG that is 40 years…What the heck?

Needless to say, Cha Cha was exhausted from her 4 days with the girls and Grandpa (Emma’s dachshund) and was very happy to get home to Ventura….as was I.

Here is another eBay score that I came home to pack up and ship on Tuesday.  I have mentioned before that my grandmother LOVED lamp parts and I found a bunch of boxes of random parts.  I listed them all with Cindy’s help (miss you Cindy!) and this one just sold for a best offer of $36.  Sweet!

Check out the listing here.

As you know….We will not be carrying Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, Iron Orchid Designs or Redesign with Prima any longer.

We will be liquidating this stock and this week you can save 20% on any of these brands!

Susan had a great idea to shake the store up and relocate the crafty stuff to the back of the store.  This opens up a huge new vignette in the front by the register.  So excited to get decorating!  My inspo is outdoor and garden.

If you have anything that will work in the new space along those lines, please bring it in.  Larger pieces please text me photos first 760-880-3535.

Here is that area getting gutted and I do mean gutted.

Here is Martha working on organizing the new “craft area”. Thanks Martha!

As many of you know, Houston, is in his first year of law school at Pepperdine.  He is actively looking for a summer internship (preferably paid), but he is open to anything.

IN GREAT NEWS….Houston placed in the top 20% of the 1L (First Year Law Students) for grades!  I am so happy and proud of him!

If you or anyone you know may have something for him this summer, please reach out!  He is fine with either LA or Ventura.  If I do say so myself, he is extremely intelligent, hard working and a great writer.  He has all the hallmarks of becoming an excellent barrister.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out with leads!  Here is a picture of Houston with my sister Kiki down at Lucci’s Restaurant in Bellingham.  This photo is bittersweet, because my sister passed away 13 years ago yesterday.  Miss her so much!

Whale redid the back wall display in the clothing section a few weeks ago.  It cracks me up and screams “Golden Girl”.  Thoughts?

Don’t forget about our Design Service.

Here is a before and after from a design job Santa Paula.  I love how updated and fresh it looks!

And for the first person that contacts us for a design job, we will waive the $50 initial consult fee.  So email or text away 760-880-3535!

Susan and I can’t wait to get started on your redo!

As I mentioned, I am OVER the rain. We brought in a truck of furniture yesterday morning because it wasn’t supposed to rain until the afternoon….but NO! It was pouring at 10:30 am.

Oh well….at least we have new items for y’all to check out!

Things we need for the store…..

Night Stands
End Tables
Dressers
Rugs
Lamps…both table and floor
Nice Throw Pillows

I have had a pretty low key week since I returned on Monday afternoon. I did get my hair done on Tuesday, so that was fun! Thanks Kelli!

And then last night, Wednesday, Sandy and I went to Fit Buddha and then headed to the Saloon for their happy hour.  Love their $5 French Fries!  As we were sitting there, we saw one of our favorite customers/consignors walk past, Eddie!

We yelled for him to stop in and we ended up hanging out with him for a while.  He was on his way to watch the KU (Universtiy of Kansas) basketball game (his alma mater).  So fun!  Eddy and his wife Denise are the best!

The store desperately needs someone to help move and put together furniture.  If you know of anyone, please reach out!
