Volume V  Issue 000014

Last Thursday, Indiana, Larissa and Emma came home to Ventura!  They even brought Grandpa.  Here are Cha Cha and Grandpa watching us leave for downtown.  So sad!

You can always tell when Indiana gets a hold of my social media…Things get fancy.  So funny!

We went out to Happy Hour at Casa Bella with Jo Dallas.  Super fun evening and they all spent the night!  Once again, we got our favorite server, Carl.

The next day, Indy had an appointment with an endocronologist that she asked me to attend.  After that, Jo and I packed up to head to the desert.

Luckily, Indiana and Larissa were going to watch the Cha Cha for me and since they were in Ventura we did not have to drive her to the Marina.  Score!

Speaking of scores, time for an eBay one.  I bought this flatware at a thrift store for $14.95 and have already sold 8 pieces of it at auction for $93.95.  We don’t usually sell many things at auction, most sell at a fixed price, so this was fun!

Check out one of the listings here.

Since Cindy has retired, I am now doing all the shipping and listing.  I had to laugh when I pulled the Longwood to ship and it looked really familiar.  LOL…it was the pattern we chose for our Wedding everyday stainless.

I am missing some pieces and will probably fill in with what is left, but when a dinner knife lists for $25.99 I kind of think I can get by.  Hahaha.

It reminded me of how much I enjoyed doing my bridal registry.  I found a story in my “3rd 100 Best Book” that talks about that so will share it now.

Back to the desert trip, Jo and I arrived at about 4 pm to Mo’s condo in Palm Desert.  Kel and Candy joined us for some drinks and then we headed to Skip’s Little Bar for dinner.  One of my favorite places.  Lots of laughter and good stories.

The next day we went to garage and estate sales. Pretty slim pickings so we hit some thrift stores. We ended up at one of our favorite Mexican restaurants for a late lunch…shrimp cocktail and some libations. The USC Michigan game had just started so that was fun to watch…in the beginning.

After lunch, Jo and I headed to Rancho Mirage to visit with my former neighbor, Sandra.  I have spoken about Sandra many times as she is retail royalty to me and I really value her advice.  She is also one of my first consignors who sent Harry the horse with me when I opened.  How many of you remember Harry?  He went from a garden view in Rancho Mirage to the front window of my stotre to an ocean view in Malibu!

After visiting Sandra, Jo and I went to The Old Spaghetti Factory for dinner.  It brings back great memories of when I used to go there with my parents and siblings back in the day in Portland.

Sunday we headed into Palm Springs to do some more thrifting and to take my mom’s cousin Gwen to lunch at Billy Reeds.

Gwen’s nephew, Paul, joined us and it was a blast.  Paul and I are related as distant cousins somehow.  LOL.

That night we went to see the Reagan Movie and ended up taking the most random Uber home from the movie theater.  It was like a Bachelorette Party Bus.  Hahahaha.

Monday, Jo and I headed out to West LA to pick up the Cha.  The girls did NOT want to give her up.  Funny, the Cha was way happier to see Jo Dallas than me.  Cha Cha would not leave Jo alone and Jo was driving.  LOL.

We arrived back to Ventura about 4 pm and decided to relax that evening…what is that?

Tuesday, Jo helped me ship at the store (thank you!) and then I did Fit Buddha.  Jo left that afternoon and I went to meet my friend, Janette, for happy hour.  It was a super fun 7 days with Jo in town, but I am ready for a vacation from my vacation…..Back to work so that I can relax!

I do have to say one thing about Jo Dallas.  She has a heart of gold and when she visits she just wants to help.  She is a great help at the store, at my house, helping me file and finding things that have sold on eBay.

An example of her kindness.  She shared some bubble gum with the girls when they were here last week.  The girls LOVED it.   So, what does Jo do? She ships six boxes to them at their Marina del Rey Condo…anonymously mind you.

Check out Indy’s text.  She is flying to Maryland today for a music festival with Larissa and Emma.  Maryland?

Time for another eBay score…I bought this at a local garage sale here in Ventura for about $25.  I took a best offer of $175 for it and think it is a fitting score to share since it is the last thing that Cindy shipped for me before retiring.  Soooo sad!  I miss her.

We are having a small going away party for her this Sunday at the Harbor Cove Cafe (I love that place)!

Here is a link to check out that listing for the artwork.

My Casita is available to rent month to month if you know of anyone.  Email me if you have any questions.

Time for another eBay score!  Coffee mugs sell really well. And these are by a famous California Potter.  These two mugs sold for $55.  I bought a huge set of Heath Pottery in Palm Springs back in December and paid $25 for the set!   Check out the listing here.

There is a story in my “2nd 100 Best Book-Money Making Madness” about the similarities between Edith Heath and my grandmother.  I think I will share that with y’all now.

Hi!  Happy Thursday!

Volume V  Issue 000011

I was alone in the store this past Saturday.  Ughhhhh.  Emily was scheduled to work, but called in sick.  It was really unfortunate, because I was trying to find someone to cover for me in the afternoon to go and see Jonathan, Emma, Larissa and Indiana in a Barbershop Quartet Performance.

Oh well, the joys of owning your own business.  I missed seeing them, but look how cute they were!

Luckily Kevin was able to come in and help.  He mostly does furniture assembly and helps move items around the store, but I was just thinking we should train him on the register….LOL.  Kidding, but not kidding!

Anyway, on Saturday I got the crazy idea to redo the front window.  Kevin was a big help.  Check out how good it looks.  And quite frankly, it looks better in person.  We have already sold 3 things out of the window!

Houston and his buddy Alex came out on Tuesday to pick up furniture for his new apartment.  Great to see him.  He hadn’t been here since Christmas.  What in the World?

On their way to Ventura they stopped in Camarillo to get an amazing Queen Mattress from one of my favorite customers, Rosemarie.  She sold it to us for a bargain…..Thank you Rosemarie!

Here is Houston with Rosemary.  I emailed her to thank her and she said “So nice to meet Houston.  He’s lovelier than I imagined.”  Aaaawwww.

I had been collecting lamps, night stands, a dresser, bedding and other items for Houston.  Tina gave us a great floor lamp.  Thank you Tina!

I was having the worst time finding him matching lamps for his night stands so on Tuesday I just grabbed an industrial lamp that I had in my office that I thought he may like.

Later that day, I headed up to Carp to the Catholic Church’s Thrift Store before my Fit Buddha class at 12:15.  I walked into the lamp section and if you can believe it, they had that exact lamp for sale.  Seriously, the same exact model with the same weird shaped plug.  I was in shock!  $10 later, I had a pair of lamps for him!

Here are the boys chilling in the store in the Restoration Hardware Airplane Chairs.  And yes, that is Cha Cha’s butt in the photo.  She would NOT pose!  These chairs are sooooooo cool and comfortable.

Made from actual airplane seats and aircraft metal.  Currently $796 each.  They were $3,000 each from Restoration Hardware.

And here we are with the truck loaded and the boys ready to leave.  They couldn’t even stay for dinner.  Bummer!

Since Houston and Emma have broken up….(and I am soooo sad), I am also helping Emma find furniture that she needs.

She is in need of a roll top desk or secretary…if any of you may have one, please let me know.  Here is a picture of one that she likes.  Wanted.

Time for an eBay score…don’t ya think?  I was just chatting with Cindy about what I should feature in the ezine this week and she said “How about that crock pot?”

Hahaha…what she meant to say was soup tureen.  I have a great story to share about soup tureens…and will do that in a second.  But here is the tureen that we sold for $250.  Check out the listing here.

Houston and I had a hysterical exchange about a soup tureen back in 2012.  I will share that story from my December 12, 2012 ezine.  If you want to read that entire ezine you can click here.

Hi!

Happy 12/12/12! What an awesome date! I love that the last 12 years had such amazing dates. Like 1-1-1 and 4-4-4. This year’s is almost like the 12 days of Christmas!

12/12/12 (One day late)
December 12, 2012
Volume VIII, Issue 11
I wish it were Issue 12!
I hope your Thanksgiving was great! Ours was awesome! The kids did all the cooking and I TOTALLY lucked out with one of the best meals EVER! We had ham (Houston decided to pass on trying a Turkey this year), green bean casserole, scalloped potatoes, Jello & marshmallow salad, and a Caesar salad made just like the famous tableside Caesar from Hy’s Steakhouse in Vancouver, BC. Then pumpkin and apple pie. Yum! And what great kids to cook for their mom! I did have to do all the dishes though.
Then the day after Thanksgiving, Houston came down with the flu. Just when I needed the kids to ship for me. Yikes! I ended up taking Houston to the doctor because he was in pretty bad shape and needed antibiotics. However, there was some good news. They measured his height and he is 6’ 1/8”!!! He made it to 6 feet and just a wee bit over. How exciting!
As Houston was starting to feel better, he decided to go to garage sales with me. It was a hoot! At one sale, I found a soup tureen that was signed Portmeirion in the Botanic Garden pattern. How much? $10. Total score! I asked Houston to carry the soup tureen to the car and when we got to the car I told him that I thought it was worth about $400 at high retail. He was very excited to hear that great news! Then he asked me, “Mom what is a Soup Latrine?”

Soup Latrine? You have got to be kidding! I laughed so hard. It is a soup tureen—NOT LATRINE. Here is a photo of that Soup Latrine and please note that it didn’t sell at auction but I really raised the price!

It was immediately after that weekend that I was asked to be on the Griff & Lee eBay Radio show. There was no way I wasn’t going to tell that story to Griff! We all cracked up about it. Click here to listen to the radio show if you missed hearing it.

Thank you for that stroll down memory lane.  Now back to the store.

In super sad news, Cindy (who has been with me since the beginning of the store doing my eBay) will be retiring effective Friday, September 20th.  Please stop in and say goodbye to her.  She will be greatly missed.

I am not gonna lie. Business is still tough. I am taking it a day at a time and am ever so grateful that we are still open. Thank you for all of your support! I am blessed to get to do what I love every day.

I always get a Gary John Bishop calendar every year and Tuesday’s message really spoke to me.

Another one of my favorite customers, Susan, was in the store last week and told me about a book that she thought might help.  I started reading it the other night and am really excited to finish it and do the exercises.  Let me know if any of you have read it!

In fun news, Jo Dallas flew in for a week.  I LOVE it when she comes to visit.

My Casita is in between tenants so she gets to stay in the upgraded unit.  She thinks it is darling!  I may have a tenant moving in soon, but if not, it is available.  Let me know if you are interested.

Jo and I have A LOT of things planned for the next few days.  Last night we were subs at Valerie’s Bunco game.  OMG, I haven’t played Bunco in years, not since I was part of a group back in Bellingham.  We used to call it Drunco and it was always fun!

Time for another eBay score!  Cindy suggested this one as well.  I am going to miss her!  A few month ago, Sandy and I stumbled on an amazing estate sale.  I picked up about 6 boxes full of stuff for under $200.  I probably paid $2 for it and this just sold for $65.  Check out the listing here.

Don’t forget about our Design Service.

I have to tell you….Cha Cha is getting smarter.  I know right?  It only took 4 years of her life, but now when I tell her to come inside she actually does it!  I am going to miss her while in Palm Desert…..

AND just so you know…Carlos has always been smart!

Volume V  Issue 000012

Such a fun weekend with Zach in town!  It was non-stop, but bless his heart, he got home and said that it was too short of a visit.  LOL!

Indy and Larissa picked him up at LAX last Thursday morning and drove him out to Ventura.  They stopped by the store to see me and do a little shopping.  Zach got a Baggu Snoopy backpack for his Freshman year at University of Washington which he starts in less than a week!

After shopping, the four of us went to happy hour at Casa Bella and it was fun!  As we were ordering from our favorite waiter, Carl, Indy said “Doesn’t that gal work for you?”.

I looked up and saw Sendia walking down Main Street.  I ran out and invited her to join us.  She came in for a visit, but didn’t have time to stay for a drink.  Then she said she had just left Sandy at her new job so I text Sandy and asked her to stop by.

She came over once she had closed the clothing store where she works now and we had another fun, but short visit.  I LOVE Ventura!

And that is Carl photo bombing us in the 2nd photo.  Hahaha.

After dinner we went back to my house and played Farkle.  Such a fast paced game and Indy won!  Cha Cha even got in on it!  LOL.

The girls headed back to the Marina Thursday night.  On Friday morning, Zach and I did Fit Buddha at 9:15 and then it was on to our day.

Before I get to the rest of Zach and my day…..Houston is moving out of the condo that he has lived in with Indiana and Emma for the past three years.  I am super sad for the reason why.  After six years together, Houston and Emma are breaking up.  Ughhhhh.

Love her like a daughter!  We are still looking for a new or gently used Queen Mattress for a good price.  We don’t need the box springs.  Thanks for your HELP.

Time for an eBay score…don’t ya think? This darling little inkwell sold for the asking price of $116.99.  It had been listed since 2016.  When I went to find it (took me a while) I noticed that there was a chip now on the inkwell portion, but the lid covered it.  We emailed the buyer and told her about it and she was fine with it because she had been watching it for some time.  Score!   Check out the listing here.

Back to Friday with Zach.  Is that like Tuesdays with Morrie?  I don’t think so!

After Fit Buddha we headed into Oxnard to see the movie Twisters.  It was actually pretty good!  I love Movie Theater Popcorn so that was our lunch.

After the movie we headed to the Beach.  Zach spent the next few hours swimming and had a blast.

After the beach, we went home to watch the NFL game and then headed to the Harbor Cove Cafe for dinner.  My new favorite restaurant!

After dinner we got in my SUV and my windshield was filthy and I needed gas for our big day on Saturday.  We stopped at the Shell by my house to get gas and I asked Zach to wash my front window.  He had no idea what I was talking about!

I gave an 18 year old his first lesson in gas station window washing.  Hahaha.  Life skills…Am I right or am I right?

While we were at Shell I was telling him about Salzers which is across the street.  He wanted to check it out!

It was a long, but super fun day.  Zach mentioned that when he is on vacation, he usually doesn’t do so much stuff!  Well, he needs to hang out with his Auntie Lynnie more!

The next day we got up early and grabbed Cha Cha to head into Marina del Rey where we would be spending the night with my kids.  I was going to be meeting Marc, Molly & Ed at USC for the Utah game and Zach was going to hang with his cousins.

En route we stopped in Thousand Oaks for a haircut for Zach.  Then it was on to Brentwood and lunch at Chin Chins…my favorite Chinese Chicken Salad ever!

Here is Zach with his first Salad and the Cha!  She was sooooo good!

We arrived to the kids condo at about 1 pm and had a chance to chill. Indy, Larissa and Zach were discussing what to do that night when my phone rang and it was Marc.

He said “Molly’s kids aren’t going to be using her season tickets so we have 4 extras if your kids want to go.” I was like what? wait? Let me find out!
I used to take the kids to a USC game every year when they were little and we hadn’t been in years. Started texting the kids. Everyone wanted to go! Small problem, 4 tickets and 5 kids.

Emma, Houston, Indy, Larissa and Zach. I tried to see if one person wouldn’t mind missing the game, but they all wanted to be together.

Finally, I figured it out… duh! I could buy 2 seats close to the 4 seats and if they couldn’t move to be together at least no one would be sitting alone. The seats were only $36 each and Houston invited his new roommate and longtime Pepperdine friend Alec. Done!

I had to meet Marc at 5 pm on campus and the game wasn’t until 8 pm. So I ubered in and the kids would drive in later to a metro station and take the train in. I would go home with them. It was turning out perfectly!

Here I am with Marc, Molly, and Ed walking over to the Coliseum.

Apparently, Molly (who works at USC) had received some very special seats from a USC donor and it was a surprise.   I couldn’t believe it!  We were in box seats high above the field.  It was insane!

It was like Fort Knox to get in.  We had to show our tickets, get wristbands and be escorted to the private elevators.  Once on the club level, there is a private section with bars and food concessions.  It was soooo cool!

During the game, I went to see my kids in their section and get Indy and Larissa to move closer to the other kids.  When I arrived, someone (a drunk student) had just thrown up on Larissa.  Poor thing!  She has an extreme phobia to puke.  I took her and Indy to the restroom to get her cleaned up and then we got them seats by the other kids.

From left to right in the group photo back row, Alec, Zach, Houston and Emma.  Front row, Larissa, Indiana, me and our two new guy friends.  LOL.

Indy text me and said that in the mayhem of the puke incident, Larissa’s hot dog had been thrown away and could I get her one.  I went out and bought one in the private area for only $15 hahaha.

It became my mission to sneak the girls in so that they could eat in peace.  I had Marc, Molly and Ed pull off their wrist bands and I went to get the girls.  My covert operation was a success!

Marc, Molly and Ed left the game early and it was time to sneak Zach in.  I met him at the entrance and discreetly put on his wristband and up we went.  No problem!

Thank you for indulging me.  It really was an epic night!  In honor of finally getting my kids to a game this year, I want to share story #34 from my 3rd 100 Best Book Kaching.

As I was re-reading this story, I realized that the night of that game (so many years ago) Kiki announced that she was pregnant and it was with Zach!  What a full circle story….

In this picture that is my sister Kiki (who was pregnant with Zach at the time), Indiana, me and Houston.

After the game, we rode the Metro Link to where the kids had parked my car and then we went to In and Out Burger!  Perfect end to a perfect day!

The next morning I took the kids out to brunch at 26 Beach.  I can NOT believe the prices at restaurants these days.  $180 for 5 of us.  No cocktails…one coffee and one diet coke.  Yikes!

We were trying to mimic the poses of the dogs above us…but only Houston got it right!

I went thrift store shopping on Tuesday and found a cart full of great stuff!  Can’t wait to share some scores from this batch.

Houston takes the bus to Pepperdine each morning and then bikes home.  On Monday, he was driven off the road by an Amazon driver.  He is pretty bruised and beaten up but O.K.  His bike is in shambles.  I have encouraged him to hire an attorney.  Amazon is ruining this country in more ways than one.
