Houston’s 24th Birthday & More Good News! Lynn’s Latest #22

Great News!  Today is Houston’s 24th Birthday
& I am saving the Best News for Last!

Yes, this little cutie (dressed in head-to-toe Gymboree) is turning 24 Today!
And I couldn’t be more proud 🙂

Welcome to Lynn’s Latest #22…

June 25, 2020
Watch for it every Friday or every other Friday!
Volume I  Issue 22

We will be taking him out to dinner in Ojai tonight to celebrate!  One of his super fun gifts is this custom biking jersey that Indiana designed for him.  I think we may just start selling these in the store…What do you think?

Watch for my kids biking around town in these and give them a wave!  Hopefully, they will arrive soon as Houston will be heading back to OKC in about 2 weeks.

Here is Houston wearing his “Birthday King” sash and crown, which by the way, he refuses to wear in public. Darn it!

I did mention some really amazingly great news that I am saving for last (it involves Val & her husband Ron)…so please read on.

Just a reminder of our current store hours…..

Tuesday to Sunday 11 to 3.
We do stay late if there are customers so if you are in the area check us out to see if we are still open after 3 pm.

Last week was a crazy one! Tons of new stuff coming in and lots of furniture going out! Thank you to all of you who came in to support us….we really appreciate it!

I will be sharing some of our new arrivals throughout this ezine.

Time for an eBay score!  So you may remember this Matisse rug that my favorite estate sale dealers (Jack and John) gave me to sell on eBay back in February.  They said to get what I could for it and we would split it.  I RARELY do this for other people, but they are special!

Check out the listing here.

I got the best offer of $1,200 for it so text the boys and they said “Take it”!  Hopefully, this sale will stick.  We do get returns on eBay items so fingers crossed and once I have positive feedback, I will be sending them a check!

In my Time Hop from 10 years ago, there was a picture of me with my friend Mo’s sister (Anne) at a James Taylor and Carol King Concert in Chicago.  I was there for eBay on Location and for some reason, Mo (my original eBay Assistant) couldn’t join me.

One of my Queen’s Court Members, Elizabeth Summers, and her husband Brian invited us to the concert their treat!  Since Mo wasn’t in town, her sister Anne got to go with me.  The significance of this photo is that when Anne and I got in the Taxi (yep no Lyft back them) the cab driver said “How are you Fellows doing today”?  Wow!  I was like, I wouldn’t have bothered with my hair and make-up to be called a dude…..

I am sure he meant “guys” but the translation was so hysterical that we laughed all night about it….even taking this photo of us standing in front of the “men’s” bathroom that we should have used if we were in fact “fellows”!

I am a huge fan of James Taylor so thank you AGAIN to Elizabeth and Brian for the concert!  We were in the second row.  I just text this photo to Mo and she was pissed that she had to miss out!

Speaking of James Taylor and Chicago….I was on a Zoom Call last night with the eCom eBay Meetup Group in Chicago.  I LOVE Rich & Nila and it was super fun!  Great to see so many of you on the screen last night!

While I was looking through my photos to find one of me with Rich and Nila for the promo email, I came across photos from when My mom and I were in Chicago for eCom 2016 and after it ended we drove to Galesburg to visit my great grandmother Maybelle’s crypt.  Neither my mom nor I had ever seen it.

Maybelle was my grandma Cheryl Leaf’s mom, who died at age 34 when my grandma was a baby.  It killed my grandma to grow up without a mom.  Here is more about that trip from my ezine back in 2016.

“After the conference, my mom and I would be heading to Abingdon, Illinois where my grandmother was born, and also to Galesburg where her mother, Maybelle, was buried in the Hope Abbey Mausoleum. It had always been my dream to visit that to honor my grandmother.

Cheryl Leaf missed her mother every day of her life as her mother passed away due to complications from childbirth at age 34 when my grandma was just 15 months old.

Here is a photo of Maybelle with my grandma on her lap and my grandma’s brother Houston standing next to them.   And that is how my “Houston” got his name.  I do think that the two Houston’s look a little bit alike.  Am I wrong?

My mom had been in touch with her second cousin, Clifford, who lives outside of Chicago and he had emailed us this information.

‘When you go down to Galesburg, I would suggest that you find out ahead of time how you can get a key to get into the mausoleum. Even though I have always wanted to, I have never seen May Belle’s crypt, either, mainly because I didn’t know how to get into the mausoleum.

A relative (Robert) told me how your grandfather, George Sussex, purchased a casket for May Belle which had a glass window over the face so that the face could be seen when the casket was closed. The idea was that your grandfather someday wanted to have the casket pulled out so that he could show your mother, Cheryl Leaf, and Houston what their mother looked like.

In some papers written by your grandfather which Lynn copied, your grandfather mentioned that he someday wanted to take Cheryl and Houston to see what their mother looked like, so that would verify what Robert had told me.’

Is that crazy? And oh so sad!

My mom and I picked up our rental car on Sunday and headed down to Galesburg. I had arranged with the local Mausoleum to leave me a key to the Hope Abbey Mausoleum so we could go directly there. It was supposed to be in the mailbox at the cemetery.

Here is that mailbox.

Original plans to view the Mausoleum on Sunday were not going to happen. It was locked up tighter than a drum. We decided to tour Abingdon that afternoon instead. Abingdon is the birthplace of Abingdon pottery and my grandmother. The factory closed about 15 to 20 years ago and the town is very run down and in sad disrepair. It makes me really sad to think that this is happening to so many small American towns.

Here is a listing I currently have on eBay for an Abingdon pottery set of candle holders.  I was asking $95.00.

Here is a photo of the factory in its current state. Looks much more like a prison than a once-thriving small town pottery.

We were able to find the spot of land where my grandmother was born during a home birth thanks to my mom’s second cousin Clifford who was on speakerphone the entire time helping us find it. Small town farm directions crack me up. Clifford was saying ‘Take the road going east towards Yates City. Once you cross the railroad tracks watch for the first four corners. At those four corners, you will take a left and go past the old one-room schoolhouse that is now a residence (you remember that don’t you Sharon?)’ My mom was like no way! The original house had burned down and there is a replacement one standing on the same land so I took a photo of it.

Here is a page from a book I made from old letters that Maybelle had written. I found them all bundled up in the Snake Pit at my grandmother’s antique shop and my grandmother had carried this treasured tie to her mother with her for over 80 years.

For Christmas in 1990, I typed each and every letter into my first computer (a Mac SE30). Then I had them printed out and also photocopied photos to bind into a book. It was a surprise Christmas gift and when they were given out to my mom, my grandmother, Lee, and Kiki we all sat around and read the book from cover to cover. Tears were streaming down everyone’s faces. It was an amazing gift and such a tribute to another mother that was taken too soon from this earth.

When my sister was dying of cancer, she kept saying “There is no way this can happen twice in one family. I can’t leave those little boys behind (ages 3 and 5 when she passed) just like grandma got left behind.

When I look at the comparison between the two houses-one old and one new, I like to think that some of the same trees that my grandmother Cheryl, her brother Houston, her mother Maybelle and father George walked and played under still remain.

That was a long and sentimental day for me and my mom. After driving all the way from Chicago to Galesburg and then to Abingdon, it was time to check into our hotel in Galesburg and make plans for the next day.

I sold this Chicago, Illinois coffee mug that night for the full asking price on eBay (almost $40). Coincidence? I think not.

The next day, we called the Mausoleum and were able to swing by and finally pick up the key. Since it was Monday, I suggested that we take some fresh flowers to Maybelle’s Crypt since she probably hadn’t received any in over a century. My mom couldn’t agree more.

Before we entered the Hope Abbey Mausoleum (which we had been hearing about for many years) my mom and I took a selfie out in front of the grand front doors. The building has a monumental entrance with two matching pillars and the inside was done entirely in white marble. The ceilings are probably 25 feet high and it is a very impressive place.

We wandered around until we found her crypt. She is buried next to her father, Peter S. Nelson (a very famous Swede from Illinois 1835-1916) and below her mother Nellie Gibson Nelson (1842-1917). Peter S. used to call his wife ‘Nellie the Nag’ we learned from all of those letters my grandmother saved. Not nice! But still very sad that both parents outlived their daughter. It is not the natural right of passage.

Here is May Belle’s beautiful resting place with the flowers on the ledge in front.

I think she was happy that we visited. As we were leaving, I turned around to see the sunlight directly hitting her crypt with the flowers barely visible from this long shot. But if you look closely at where the sunlight is reflecting from the floor to above, you will see her final resting place and the purple flowers.

That was an amazing experience and not much else could top our entire journey to the south of Illinois.”

OK, back to the present day! While going through photos from that day back in 2016, I found another one that gave me goosebumps. It is of my mom as we walk to the front of the Mausoleum. There is a definite aura around us and the building…. almost as if Maybelle and my grandmother (maybe all of our relatives) are showing us the way! Wild! But sooooo cool! I LOVE history and stuff like this if you can’t tell. LOL!

OK, time to show you what has been going on at the store!  LOTS!  We sold so much stuff that this one section is decimated.  We are working hard to get it back to a pretty and lovely area!  Come in and check it out.

OK, time to showcase some more fun pieces that just arrived.  Remember to check our website www.lynnsconsignments.com to see lots of our new things!

I kind of took last week off.  Yes, I really did get almost a week off thanks to Sandy, Peggy, and Cindy!  You girls rock!

I spent a few days at a beach house in Faria with my posse from Palm Desert….Candy, Mo, and Kel..”Manny, Mo, and Jack” LOL!  My mom was also there.  Here we are in our “vintage” jackets.  Super fun and relaxing time!

Indy and Houston stopped by at mealtime.  Isn’t that what kids are for?  LOL….Indiana bought a new (well vintage) Schwinn 10 speed that soooooo reminds me of the one that I worked for when I was in 6th grade.  I earned 75 cents an hour working in the basement tank (a concrete fireproof room) sorting collector’s plates for my grandma.  She would match whatever I earned.  I spend 100 hours down there and ended up with $150 to buy my bike!  Can’t wait to find a photo of that 🙂  Here is Indy with her bike.

Time for an eBay score!

Well, I am hoping that this is an eBay score in the making.  This elf has a bid already at $19.99.  Not really sure why? Hoping he is something rare.  I do call him “Creepy Cute” in the title.  Check out that listing here.

Elves are kind of like Tiki’s right?  Well, that does remind me that Tiki Jason and his wife Staci were here a few weeks ago and we went out to Ventiki!  Super fun whenever they come to town from Vegas.

We carry some really amazing chimes and mobiles in the store!  They sell really quickly because they make great gifts and are very reasonably priced.  Here is a peek at some of them, but you really need to check them out in person.  Here is a link to shop them online.  And FREE SHIPPING!

Here are a few pictures of them in the store. Really hard to get a good shot though with so much going on around, behind, and above. 🙂

OK, time for another eBay score! Yes, this sold for the best offer of $250! I LOVE eBay!

Check out that listing here.

Many of you have asked me if I would teach a “How to Sell on eBay” course here in Ventura. I am considering it. I would probably do a 3-4 hour course and expect you to list your first item while in the class. Let me know if any of you are interested? It may be something that we could also do on Zoom for those who are out of town. Thoughts?

So, both Houston and I are July babies. My birthday is a few days before his and I must tell you, the year he was born was the most painful birthday of my life! That kid was almost 9 pounds and he had the biggest shoulders. I was so uncomfortable lying on the couch at my mom’s house celebrating my birthday that year!

When Houston was born they called a Code Purple and almost had to do an emergency C section. Luckily (or unlucky for me) a kind older doctor was able to rip him out with forceps and only managed to break his clavicle. Poor little baby.

This year my mom, Indy, and I celebrated my birthday at the Water’s Edge Covid Style! Gotta love the masks. Thank you to everyone for making my birthday such a great day!

Now that we are open again, we are getting in new stuff every day!  You must come in or check on our website because you know how fast stuff comes in and goes out!  There is a section under shop/online at the very bottom that shows New Arrivals.

Here is one of those featured items.  This is a gorgeous sleeper sofa!

Whenever I want inspiration for a painting project, I check out my friend Carrie at The Passionate Home in Langley, BC, Canada.  We have visited her shop several times (as it is just across the border from Bellingham).  I LOVE what she is doing!  Check out this post of what you CAN do with Annie Sloan…..and she is right….Isn’t it magical?

Don’t forget that you can always order your paint supplies on our website……….

Lots of great paint colors in stock! And next time you are in, please ask for a free copy of her color chart as shown here….

So, I hope you have made it through this week’s ezine because as promised, I have saved the best news for last.

I thank you all for your support and contributions to help Val (my trusty friend and employee) and her husband Ron as he battles Esophageal cancer.  Do you remember this Go Fund Me Page?

Well, here is an update….Please don’t cry!  Well, I did and they were tears of happiness and gratefulness.

Val posted this on Facebook a few days ago…..Ron has got that TWINKLE back in his eye!  God is great!

And then yesterday, I got this text from Val….

“He is doing great!  I actually am waiting for him to let me know what time to pick him up.  He is eating and drinking.  No choking.  Thank God!  The Doctors are so happy with his progress.  It’s just been one week since the surgery.  Crazy.

The team of Doctors and staff at Cottage have been the best throughout this whole ordeal!  Even with the crazy pandemic going on they haven’t missed a beat.  He just called.  I have to head up there.  Said the Doctors were both in and the final pathology report showed NO cancer.  He still will have to be monitored but essentially it is gone.  I am so relieved.  I am bawling!  I will talk to you later.  Thanks for everything!”

AND that my friends is THE BEST NEWS ever!  Just reading it again made me cry….AGAIN!  Hopefully, Val will be back in the store soon!

Not much to report on the Carlos front this week.  Actually, I think that is a good thing!  No sneaking out, no running away, and not too much attacking of our feet.

Why do cats do that?  I swear, I have scratches and claw marks all over my feet.  I am going to share one of my favorite photos of him that I don’t think I have shared.  It is him walking down the hallway with a hair tie in his mouth.  He LOVES these!  They make the best “fetch” toys ever.  I just ordered him a pack of 50.  LOL!

Don’t you just love the way his tail curves?  It is like that all the time, except for when he is MAD and then he thumps it really loud.  Cracks me up!  Hard to get a photo of that but this is kind of what it looks like…although his tail is moving!

Here is Carlos hanging with me when I returned from being away.  He was not going to let me go anywhere else.

And one last photo of him chilling in his Kitty Kondo.  Yes, he does use it a bit these days.  Pretty fun I would imagine!

I am going to end this ezine with a collage of photos that Val sent me for my birthday….here’s hoping she will be back soon!  Miss you friend!

Thanks for reading my ezines!  I appreciate it….as always!

Watch for it every Thursday or every OTHER Thursday!
Actually, I am changing it to FRIDAYS!
Volume I  Issue 21

As you are reading this, my mom has arrived back in Ventura.  She returned to Washington state back in early March, right after our 2nd-anniversary party, and has not been able to get back here due to the pandemic.  Stop in and say Hi!  She will be in the store on Friday and Saturday.

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to fill out our survey regarding hours!  We have drawn a winner of the $25 gift certificate and it goes to……drum roll, please…..Cherie Bouchard!  There is a $25 credit waiting for you in your customer account.  See you soon!

I am thinking about being Closed Mondays and Tuesdays and open Wed through Sat 11 to 5:30 and Sun 11 to 3.

Or Closed Mondays.  Open  Tues-Thurs 11 to 3 and Fri-Sat 11 to 5:30 and Sun 11 to3.

I just think it is getting too confusing!

For now, we are sticking with Tues to Sun 11 to 3.

We do stay late if there are customers so if you are in the area check us out to see if we are still open after 3 pm.

It’s been pretty quiet around here. Lots of great furniture coming in, but not so many of you customers….Please let us know what we can do to make you feel more comfortable…..

In my Time Hop from 4 years ago, there was a picture of Indiana surprising my dad.  It was super hot in Palm Desert…like 110 degrees…so my mom flew Indy and me up there to get out of the heat.  We didn’t tell my dad because well…he is super fun to surprise (ughhh I need to make that past tense) He was super fun to surprise.  I love this look on Indy’s face when she walked into his den to say “Howdy”.  And he responded with his famous line….”What in the World?”  Miss hearing that……

While we were in Bellingham, I started looking for retail space for my Lynn’s Consignments store.  Bellingham was my first choice.  Isn’t that crazy?  Life works in mysterious ways, doesn’t it?  I am sooooo glad that I ended up in Ventura or I would have been too far away from my kids!

While scoping out retail locations we came across these two streets that intersect…super close to my grandmother’s antique store (literally about a block away).  I had no idea that these intersected when we named our daughter Indiana Elizabeth.  Wow!

OK, time for an eBay score.  Check out this Villeroy & Boch Gravy Boat that sold for an asking price of $127 less 10%.  I LOVE Villeroy & Boch.  If anyone has pieces of V&B to sell, I am INTERESTED!

BTW, I tried to buy Villeroy & Boch when we were visiting Houston in Heidelberg three years ago.  He was doing his sophomore year abroad with Pepperdine.  Even though V&B is a German company, the pieces were way more expensive over there than I can buy them here.  Very strange!

Here is a photo of the exact same pattern from the Villeroy & Boch Outlet store on the Hauptstrasse in Heidelberg.  Hauptstrasse translates to Main Street!  A dinner plate goes for almost $100.  Yikes!

Here is a photo of Houston and the “Milchmen” after a schnitzel dinner out.  That year abroad was such a great experience and he came home with his core group of best friends.  The boys call themselves the “Milchmen” (long story) and then of course there is Noel.

Pictured from Left to Right, Noel, Indiana, Riley, Houston, Alec, Logan, and my mom.  We had sooooooo much fun visiting him!   This was February of 2017.

Back to the store!  We have been getting in some really great high-end consignments.  Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Ethan Allen, etc., etc.  You must stop in or shop us online.  We try and get photos up on the website immediately!  But it doesn’t always happen and some things sell before they even get through the back door.

Check out this awesome Restoration Hardware Side Board.

We got in a couple of truckloads of furniture this week.  Here are the boys and Sandy after moving a ton of stuff!  I would say they look a bit worn for the wear.  This back corner of the store has been fully gutted as we prepare for a truckload of high-end home furnishings arriving later today!   It’s gonna be WILD!
How cute is this Oxford Navy Wall shelf that just came in?  It even says VENTURA!!!!

Time for an eBay score!

Well, I am hoping that this is an eBay score in the making.  I listed this item for one of my consignors (Fern) to see if maybe we could get more for it online than in the store.  I rarely do this and only did it this time because Fern is just too sweet!  No bids yet and I am very surprised by that.  But there are two days left!  Check out this deck of cards with Movie Stars from the 1932 Olympics here.

Oh, that reminds me.  Movie Stars…..Indiana was featured on the Pepperdine Theatre Instagram Page today!  I am so proud of her.  Check her out!

Time for some more views of the store.  No, better not.  It really is a mess waiting to be Tszujed this weekend.  Come on in and see us in the wild, Tszujing away.  LOL.

Tszuj

Verb…….To tweak, fluff, primp, improve, make fabulous (most often in wardrobe/fashion context, but others also apply).

Pronunciation: Begins and ends with the same “zh” sound, as in “measure”.

Made popular by/notable people you may have heard use it:  Carson Kressley of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Speaking of “Queer Eye”, on a recent episode, they featured Kazi Baskets!  How cool is that?  We have special ordered a few of these baskets from Kazi’s “Queer-Eye” collection and they are in stock and ready to be checked out.  Fun Fun!

OK, time for a fun story!  Well, I think it is fun.  My friend Joanne asked me when she and her husband Jeff could come over and hang out on my deck and have some drinks.  Anytime!  So they came over last Sunday and I invited Steve and Sandy.  It was super fun!

Check us out!  And Jeff and Joanne even helped put together my hammock…it took three USC grads an hour to do it!  LOL.  And Joanne and Jeff’s daughters even took Carlos out in his harness.

OK, time for another eBay score!  Yes, this sold for the asking price of over $17.  If this doesn’t make you believe that you can sell ANYTHING on eBay, then I have no idea what will.

Check out that listing here.

We just got in some super neat shepherd’s bags, coin purses, pillow covers, letter holders, and iPad cases from Turkey.  They are handmade from Kilim and will make great gifts.  Reasonably priced between $12.95 and $29.95.

Now that we are open again, we are getting in new stuff every day!  You must come in or check on our website because you know how fast stuff comes in and goes out!  There is a section under shop/online at the very bottom that shows New Arrivals.

Here is what that part of the page looked like today.

Here is a close-up of those red bucket/barrel swivel chairs and only $249.50 each.  These won’t last!
Check out this amazing Palette Knife painting (an original) by a very famous artist. His paintings are listed in the $5,000 range. This one is awesome and quite large. Great for your ski cabin. Priced to sell at $595.00.
Took my kids out to Brunch this past Sunday (Father’s Day) at Water’s Edge.  It was super nice to have breakfast in a restaurant!  And outside by the harbor was even better!
Back to the store. Not sure if I have already shown you this paint project….I don’t think I have so here goes! Sandy did this little dresser in Annie Sloan Oxford Navy with gold gilding and floral knobs. It is soooo pretty! $249.50.

Don’t forget that you can always order your paint supplies on our website.………

My kids (well Houston in particular) have gone nutty for biking.  You can see him almost every day biking around Ventura.  He loves this city and all of the wonderful bike lanes.  Here are my kiddos last week when they popped into the store.

For father’s day, my mom asked me to please post a photo of her dad.  She requested this photo of  (from left to right) my dad, my mom’s cousin Donald, and my grandfather in front of their Pullman, WA apartment house where they lived when they were getting their masters from WSU.  They look like they had just gotten back from hunting.  My grandpa leaf was a HUGE hunter.  Mostly pheasant.  That is his bird dog Brit in the picture.  Pretty original huh?  Brit for a Brittany Spaniel?

Really missed my dad this father’s day. I hope all of you dads out there had a wonderful day!

A few nights ago, Carlos had been chilling on my bed, as he typically does.  I was working and went into the family room to say hi to Indiana.  She was working as well on her schoolwork and the room was pretty dark.  I notice that the screen door was open about 6 inches.  Where is Carlos?  Where is Carlos?

Checked my room and no cat.  Man is he sneaky!  He had slid the door open with his paw and we found him outside in the dark under the picnic table.  We couldn’t grab him and he raced for the front gate. Ughhhhh!  Indy finally got him and he hissed at her.  I guess that cat really wants to be a hunter like my grandfather.  LOL.  But seriously, it scared us to death.

Found this funny framed piece of art that definitely got it right.

This piece of art reminded me of how “in” orange and blue are these days.  Annie Sloan featured a New York designer on her recent Instagram story and his NY kitchen is phenomenal.  I absolutely LOVE it!  Done in Annie Sloan Barcelona Orange and Napoleonic Blue.  Check it out!

Back to Carlos, because as you know, this is HIS CORNER.  Not Annie Sloan’s Corner.  But, just maybe, she does need her “own” section in my ezine.  LOL!

Carlos is enamored of Houston’s bicycle.  Here he is trying to help Houston replace the tape on the handlebars.  Houston does NOT look amused.

O.K. one last photo of Carlos the King chilling in my room.  I just couldn’t help myself.  LOL!  We love this kitty so much we are thinking about getting another one or a dog.  Thoughts?

I am going to end this ezine with one of my favorite photos from our 2 year anniversary at the store on March 1st, 2020.  The photo shows two of my best high school friends giving me a kiss.  Love these girls!  AND they flew down just for the party!  Now, those are great friends 🙂

Pictured…Jo Dallas, me and Kathy Rutan.

And, as an ending note, my Palm Desert best friends, Candy, Kel and Mo (I know I know it sounds like Manny, Mo and Jack) are heading out here next week for a beach retreat with my mama. I can’t wait to see my posse! Yay! Life is good and getting better!

Thanks for reading my ezines!  I appreciate it….as always!

$140 For A Cardboard Figurine?…Lynn’s Latest #20

CHEERS!  We are Officially OPEN!

Welcome to Lynn’s Latest #20…

June 11, 2020
Watch for it every Thursday or every OTHER Thursday!
Or possibly even on a Friday like today!  When I run out of time…..
Volume I  Issue 20

Not sure how many of you know this, but it has always been my desire to be known as the “Cheers” of Midtown. Check out this blurb from my website…..

“We want to make Lynn’s Consignments a fun and special place to shop. The kind of place where you will want to stop at least once a week to see what is new.
Just like my father, I always make it a point to remember everyone’s name…whether they are parents of my kid’s friends, my grocery store clerk, my post office worker or a server in a restaurant. My store will be that place (just like Cheers) where everyone knows your name”.

Here ares some train pics of me and my dad. I miss him a lot! Don’t you love my saddle shoes?

Thank you for taking the time to fill out our survey regarding hours!  I would LOVE to get a few more responses before I make any decisions.

We are currently open 11-3 pm every day (EXCEPT for Mondays) and also by appointment.  Our hours are limited until Val and Emma can return to in-store work.

What I have gleaned so far from the survey is that being closed Mondays is fine!  Whew!  It is so nice to have one dark day (like on Broadway) where no one texts me!  LOL!  Also, an 11 am open seems to be fine as well.  The nights so far that you want us to be open later are Thursday and Saturday.  Very interesting!

If you haven’t filled out the survey yet, please do so.  I am going to give away a $25 gift certificate to one of you.  Just email me once the survey has been completed.  If you have already filled it out, please email me as well (I am dying to know who put “take off your clothes” in the comments HaHaHa).  We will draw a name from a hat this Saturday.

Here is a quick survey and THANKS for filling it out!

Right before we had to shut down, I took a back road drive to meet Annie Sloan in person.  You probably don’t remember, but I wrote about it in ezine #10.  Here is a link to that newsletter if you would like to read it.

From that ezine…..”The Annie Sloan event was still going to happen as planned on Saturday.  I was thrilled to get a chance to meet the one and only, the woman, the myth, the legend!  She hadn’t been on the west coast in almost ten years.

Not to jump ahead, but I just had to……Here is a photo of me and Annie once I got there.

Back to the story of how I got to my destination and met Annie……”My GPS took me way out and around LA. I ended up on the Pear Blossom Highway and drove through ski resorts…it was wild!  I think I was close to Wrightwood where I used to ski with my ex-husband, William, back in the day.

In fact, I even went skiing there once with him, Dean Factor (great-grandson of Max and best man in our wedding), and his then-girlfriend, Shannon Doherty.  LOL!  I will have to find that photo to share with you!”

Well, I finally found it, and here it is.  That is me, William, Dean Factor (founder of Smash Box Cosmetics), and Shannon Doherty (90210).  She and I skied a few runs with the boys and then she got stoned (I had a beer) and we ate lunch.  I remember sitting with her in the restaurant and fans coming up and asking her if she was Shannen Doherty, and she would say “Oh, I get that a lot”.  LOL!

Back to reality!  Time for an eBay score.  Bought this super cool cardboard sculpture at an estate sale in Palm Springs in 2015.  Paid $5.  Finally sold it for $140 a few days ago.  Check out the listing here to read more about it.

Most exciting news of this past week was that I took Houston, Indy, and Indy’s boyfriend, Brandon, back to Palm Desert (where we lived for 16 years) for the weekend!  Woooohooooo!  The Airbnb that we stayed in was phenomenal.  Seriously?  The photos don’t do it justice.

Here are Indy, Brandon and Houston standing by the front door with the pool in the background.

The unit we leased is in the famed Sandpiper complex which was designed by William Krisel and built between 1958 and 1970.  The units are all designed around 17 different condominium circles with the pool in the center.  Isn’t this amazing?  I had no idea this existed!

Here are both of my kids on their laptops attending college classes (Houston Master’s in eD with Notre Dame and Indiana Theatre with Spanish Minor at Pepperdine) with a neighbor’s dog checking them out and barking loudly from outside.

An interesting thing popped up when I was doing my Sandpiper Research.  It was a graphic that showed that the Sandpiper was a favorite place to shoot photos of famed MCM (Mid Century Modern) photographer Julius Shulman.

This was crazy for me because about 14 years ago, Julius needed a ride out to Palm Springs for a Mid Century Modern Club Meeting and to receive his star on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame. My mom was a member, got the notice, and let my brother know about it. My brother is a professional photographer (among other things, Jeweler-GIA certified, Pianist, etc.) and jumped at the opportunity to spend 4 plus hours in a car with the man, the myth, the legend.

I got to meet Julius and give him a few of my books and I hope we can find the photo……I can’t find the photo…Ughhhh…so here is a photo of how he looked back then on February 17th, 2006.

Since the store has been open it has been super quiet! Where are you people?

Not sure if it is the hot weather or our limited hours, but it is worrying me a bit. Please stop in and see us. There is plenty of room to socially distance and most people are wearing masks. We are not requiring a mask, but if you feel more comfortable, please wear one and we will honor your wishes and wear one as well.

In some good news, Indiana and I have been working on the back garages. Well, more Indy than me, but she hung little white twinkly lights today and got it more organized. Looks great and tons of outdoor furniture just waiting for you. Here is a photo of the work in progress. Come in and check it out!

The Green Stacking Chair you see on the table is available in multiples.  They are a great buy at $39.50 each.  Check them out here.

Time for an eBay score!

Check out this T-shirt and see why it sold for so much.  It sold for almost $40.  Yes, you read that right!  And, it was one of the T-shirts that my friend Joel shipped me for FREE!  What is not to love about eBay?  Seriously?  I have always said that is like gambling, but you ALWAYS win!

Oh, that reminds me.  I was on the eBay for Business Podcast with Griff last week talking about my brick-and-mortar store and my eBay business.  Check out that episode here.  I come on at about minute 32:20 and I am on until about 46:20…Yikes, I was on for 14 minutes of the 60-minute podcast….WOW!  BTW, I Love Griff!

This photo shows Griff, Lee, me, and all the handlers at an eBay Open about 12 years ago right after my Kaching Book came out.

Time for some more views of the store.  It is looking really,  really great!  As the very few customers that have come through have told me.  LOL.  Jamie if you are reading this, thank you for the packing peanuts, but we found some canning jar lids in the bottom of the box.  I have them for you on my desk!

Here are another one of our Kazi basket walls….Ocean Blues and natural colors!  Gotta love this wall!  You can purchase on our website here.  Free shipping, delivery in Ventura, pickup or curbside delivery!

OK, time for a super funny story.  Well, it is funny to me!  I bought a “Kitty Kondo” for my favorite boy, Carlos.  Yes, I really did it!  Did NOT want to be one of those Cat Ladies, but just couldn’t help myself.  LOL.

I asked Adolio to put it together.  Not such a great idea.  It was a little bit labor-intensive.  Here is Adolio working on it in the back of the store.

Well, Carlos’ house did not get put together during business hours.  So, Sandy offered to take it home and fix it!  Yay!  Here she is with it loaded into her convertible.  She is a great friend!

You will have to wait until Carlos’ Corner to see how this story ends…..LOL!

Now that we are open again, we are getting in new stuff every day!  You must come in or check on our website because you know how fast stuff comes in and goes out!  There is a section under shop/online at the very bottom that shows New Arrivals.

Here is what that part of the page looked like today.

Back to Palm Desert and my thrifting mission!  My friend Mo and I hit every good thrift store during my visit.  We thought that with the stores finally opening we would find some amazing things.  Not so much!  I did buy a ton of dinnerware and flatware.  I also picked up some treasures for the store.  Not as many as I usually do, but the SUV was still packed.

Here is a Herend Serving Dish that I bought for $4.  I started the auction at $99.  We will see……

It was so fun to spend time in the Desert with my best mom/baseball friends!  Mo, Candy, Kel, and her daughter Riley.  Here we are hanging out and playing games in the Condo.

Back to the store.  Peggy finished that corner cabinet!  Woooohoooooo!  Old Ochre on the back and Chateau Grey on the front with decoupaged Botanicals on the inside.

Check it out here.

Don’t forget that you can always order your paint supplies on our website……….

Lots of great paint colors in stock!

Speaking of our website, Emma has been working on it from New Jersey and she tells me that we have over 1,000 items listed for sale.  Free shipping on the small items.  Check it out here.

We have some really neat products as you can see by this snapshot of a few of our categories.  The Botanical Prints (that Peggy used on that cabinet), License Plate Signs, and Recycled Ornaments are some new additions.

I have been working on a fun project at my house.  You are probably thinking, Who hasn’t?  Right?  In any event, I have taken on the project of adding a workspace to my bedroom.  With sooooo many people living in my house, this makes total sense!  I bought the cutest desk at……wait for it…..drumroll….Lynn’s Consignments  Fun Home Furnishings.

Then I totally gutted the room.  Here is a before picture.  I really hope that I have one.  Well, I don’t really have one of it set up, but I do have this one of Steve from Labrano Movers moving stuff in.

So this master bedroom is HUGE!  I had the bed on the sidewall and a couch under the window.  When I moved in my new and darling desk, I put it under the window and the couch at the foot of the bed.  Didn’t make for a separate work area which I believe is so important when it is in your living space.

Decided to get creative and move the bed under the window and the desk and couch to the opposite wall.   Here it is as a work in progress.  Hopefully, I can find some of the “real” before photos to share in the next ezine.

The best part of this move is that it opened up a HUGE wall for me to work with and add some art.  There is nothing I LOVE more than an oil painting wall.  Check out these photos of me trying to figure out what will work and what won’t.  Can’t wait to show you the after of this 20-foot long wall.  FUN!

Turns out the couch was tooooooo big.  Time to change it out for some armchairs.  I saw the most darling spindle white chair on Tuesday morning.

They are closing some locations so the chair was 20% off.  Score!  It had light blue cushions and I wanted to find a matching one.  Have not been able to find one and I have called 20 Southern California stores.  Here is what it looks like in case you can help me out!

Peggy found me a darker blue one in Thousand Oaks that I bought (JUST IN CASE) I can’t find another one.  We will see how it turns out, but for now, there is one cool cat that LOVES this new chair!

Leads me right into Carlos’ Corner and the ending to the Kitty Kondo debacle. LOL! Sandy got it put together in about 30 minutes and I picked it up. Here it is all shrink wrapped and ready to be opened. Just a heads up, Carlos was NOT impressed.

We got all of the shrink wrap taken off and Carlos still wasn’t interested.  Indy and I kept picking him up and placing him on it, but he kept jumping off.  Tried treats, his favorite toys, and catnip.  We finally gave up. Here he is getting ready to jump off AGAIN!

We found him an hour later asleep in Houston’s dresser drawer. Seriously? Who needs an expensive Kitty Kondo? Not Karlos!

O.K. just one more eBay item to share.  I bought this Ed Harcourt Musical Artist poster six months ago at a yard sale.  From my research, it appears to be super rare.  If anyone can take a look at the listing and help me out, I would really appreciate it!  Here is a link to the listing.  I think I am asking $1,000.

OK, one last eBay score of something that actually sold!  Those are the most fun…am I right or am I right?  These 3 spoons sold for $90.  Yes, I did say $90.00.  Do you eat from teaspoons that cost $30 each?  I certainly don’t.  Maybe I need to start!  LOL……Check them out here.

Oh by the way, they were shipped to Walla Walla, Washington.

I am going to end this ezine with one of my favorite photos from our 2 year anniversary at the store on March 1st, 2020. The photo shows two of my best high school friends giving me a kiss. Love these girls! AND they flew down just for the party! Now, those are great friends 🙂
